Northants Chamber Business Excellence Awards – Training and Development Award 2008 & 2009
In July 2008 Alderwood were given the opportunity to enter the Northants Business Excellence Awards across a number of categories. A category that the company is extremely proud of is training and development. Mike Kalogerou, Head of Training and Development, at this time, submitted the following information for the judge’s consideration:-
Alderwood LLA Ltd was established and founded in 2000 to cater for the needs of children and adults who have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders. Alderwood’s guiding principles have been to provide and integrate support systems within the framework of a small family type house. Alderwood started with just one child in our care. Since this time we have grown significantly. From beginning with just one residential home, one service user and 8 staff, we grew rapidly to where we are today. Seven residential homes, 25 service users and approximately 190 members of staff. Alderwood’s reputation within residential care for adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders is practically unrivalled both in the county and nationally. Our residents are some of the most challenging within the country and as a result of our hard work Alderwood has grown a reputation for being a 5 star provision for care.
As a result of our hard work and commitment to staff training and development we achieved the OFSTED “outstanding” award for the first time in 2007 and then continuously until 2012. Alderwood not only provides 24 hour care for our residents, we were also a registered school up until 2015. As all our homes are now all adult provisions they are all overseen by CQC. Anita Smart, Managing Director has grown and developed Alderwood into the outstanding provision we see today with over 20 years experience in social care and managing a care home specialising in Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Over the years Anita has written and delivered well over 50 training programmes for staff working both internally and externally for Alderwood. As a result of the commitment to development Alderwood gained Investors in People back in 2004 and have continued to improve year on year. Using the philosophy of TEACCH (Treatment and Education for Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children), Alderwood have made huge strides forward in helping our service users live as fulfilling a life as possible. Our growth has enabled Alderwood to have their own dedicated TEACCH resources team, something very few autism provisions have. The advantages of our resource team gives Alderwood that competitive edge over other providers.
PROACT-SCIPr-UK® is the second of Alderwood’s philosophies which was implemented when Alderwood was founded back in 2000. It stands for Positive Range of Options to Avoid Crisis and use Therapy and provides Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention. PROACT-SCIPr-UK® trains staff in the use of low arousal, proactive approaches in dealing with challenging behaviour. It enables service users to be empowered by focusing on person centred planning and assists individuals to maintain self control. PROACT-SCIPr-UK® was first developed in New York and has been revised by the Loddon School. It is now nationally recognised and implemented in the UK. Alderwood have seven fully qualified PROACT-SCIPr-UK® instructors, with Anita Smart as a Principle Instructor. All Alderwood staff receive this training and become licensed for one year. This is also refreshed annually.

Alderwood were announced as the winners in this category by the former editor of the Sun Kelvin McKenzie. This award was sponsored by Ovation XL and commented that –
“Each of the short-listed organisations displays exceptional flair-providing evidence of true commitment to the development of their staff that is way above the other applicants. Alderwood LLA caters for the needs of children and adults who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Alderwood LLA provides 24 hour residential care, Anita Smart, then Strategic Director and Head of Residential Services, has personally written fifty detailed training programmes for her carers who are dedicated to their task of looking after residents with hugely different needs. We detected a strong sense of wanting to be the best of the best in this highly challenging environment.”
In 2009, we entered submissions for three catagories; Business of the Year (over 50 employees), Innovation Award and the Training & Development Award. Alderwood were delighted to be shortlisted in all three categories and proud to receive 2nd place in the Training & Development category.
