Alderwood LLA was founded in the year 2000 to cater for the needs of children and young adults who have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and challenging behaviour. As Alderwood has evolved we now cater for the needs of young people and adults.
Its guiding principle is to provide care and education as an integrated support system within a framework of small ‘family’ type homes.
Alderwood is now recognised nationally as the foremost specialist provision for those with complex Autism. The whole service provided has been reflected in the excellent CQC (Care Quality Commission) reports.
Alderwood provides round the clock residential care and education for twenty-eight adults in eight separate residential homes. These are supported by the Alderwood Professional Development Centre, which provides continual staff training, staff development and behaviour support surgeries.
Alderwood offers residential care and education for individuals with complex Autism Spectrum Disorders and associated learning disabilities and challenging behaviours.
We provide specifically designed services for each individual through an integrated programme of care and education. All placements are constructed on this bespoke basis and run for 365 days a year. We also run a day placement facility.
Behaviour Support Surgeries
Alderwood provides regular behaviour support surgeries, available to staff at all levels. These have been uniquely developed in order to create, monitor and update strategies for managing behaviours and expanding the potential of our residents. This will often instigate the implementation of additional specially designed resources.
Agreed strategies are devised following the Alderwood Visual Communication System and PROACT-SCIPr-UK® principles. The behaviour support surgeries ensure that theory and practice always relates specifically to the individual.
Our service users access local amenities, such as supermarkets, library, hair-dressers, dentist and medical centres. Our senior team liaise with medical providers, beauticians, chiropodist, optician and shops to ensure they receive appropriate care and communication. Where appropriate, Alderwood have provided training on ASD and low arousal approaches.
All activities are fully risk assessed and inividualised for our service users. Many enjoy regular swimming lessons, equestrian sessions, bowling, autism-friendly cinema and sports. Visiting country parks across Northamptonshire and beyond is an activity enjoyed by all our service users whether it be for fresh air, exercise, tranquility or as part of our desensitisation programme.
Activities at Alderwood are opportunities for enjoyment, learning and improving social communication skills with staff, peers and professionals. As such, our activities occupy an integral role in our lifelong learning curriculum. Our team ensure that everyone gets the most out of every part of the waking day, whether that is learning money skills, practicing the green cross code or taking orders and purchasing items for their peers. We are extremely proud of the achievements made every day in Alderwood. Such achievements are recorded by our own Adult Development Programmes (ADP). This demonstrate the tremendous progress that is possible in all aspects of life with autism, such as running a tuck shop, resources production (e.g. structured puzzles and art packs), admin jobs, car valeting, chores within homes (e.g. cleaning, making their beds etc.), gardening, cake sales, interviewing potential employees and much more. All of our service uses are encouraged to engage with voluntary work.
Alderwood provides the opportunity for residents to holiday in our own specialised home in Heacham on the Norfolk coast as well as day trips to the static caravan situated locally at the Billing Aquadrome Holiday Park in Northamptonshire.
Trips to these locations are organised on a shared or individual basis as appropriate and are supported by good staffing levels. Each venue can accommodate up to two clients supervised by residential care staff.
Holidays and outings maintain the same structured approach as the daily routine of the Alderwood residential homes with a wide range of recreational and educational activities being organised to suit individual needs.
The holiday home in Heacham, Norfolk is situated within walking distance of the beach and the static caravan offers a wide range of activities within the holiday park that our service users can access daily. All sites offer a range of local attractions including fishing, walking, cycling and a varied selection of restaurants.
